ANPR accurately reads vehicle number plates without human intervention. It involves the use of high-speed image capture with supporting illumination, character detection mechanism, character sequence verification as they are from the vehicle’s license plate. In addition, it also comprises character recognition to convert image to text. Thus, it produces metadata that identifies an image that contains a vehicle license plate and the plate’s associated decoded text.

ANPR is used by police forces to track criminal behavior and on highways to detect vehicle speed. However, some other uses include car parking management, traffic management, journey time analysis tolling, weighbridges, bus lane enforcement, retail park security, etc.
